57 Days to Go: Kristen McDonald Rivet
Who: Kristen McDonald Rivet
Where: MI-08 (parts of five counties including the cities of Flint and Saginaw)
Why: Just like Arizona, Michigan is a battleground state with a close Senate race and two House seats up for grabs that are both drawing national attention.
Kristen McDonald Rivet's top priorities are lowering costs for families and improving outcomes for children through affordable high-quality childcare. Before she was elected to the Michigan State Senate in 2022, she served as Executive Director of Michigan Head Start and Chief of Staff for Michigan’s Department of Education.
Her first standalone legislation signed into law was a common-sense gun violence prevention bill requiring safe storage of firearms around children—especially poignant following last week’s school shooting in Georgia which was perpetrated by a 14-year-old.
The top House GOP super PAC just increased its ad budget in Flint by $1.8 million to support McDonald Rivet’s opponent, Paul Junge, who is making his third try at this seat. Junge served in the Department of Homeland Security during the Trump administration.
Michigan’s 8th District is currently represented by Democrat Dan Kildee, who has served six terms in Congress and is retiring after a cancer diagnosis and successful surgery last year.
