53 Days to Go: Tim Stringham
Who: Tim Stringham
Where: Maricopa County, Arizona, home to more than half of the state’s population
Why: The Maricopa County Recorder safeguards the county’s voter registration and early voting, including all mail voting for almost 2.5 million registered voters in Arizona, where 80% of residents vote by mail.
The current recorder, Republican Stephen Richer, strenuously refuted false allegations of election fraud, and subsequently lost his party’s primary to Justin Heap, who was funded by election deniers. Heap has not acknowledged the legitimacy of the results from either the 2020 election or the 2022 gubernatorial race in which Republican Kari Lake—now Senate candidate—was defeated.
Tim Stringham has served in the Army, including a tour in Afghanistan, and in the Navy as an attorney in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He decided to run for office after January 6 and learned about the recorder position through his work as a human rights lawyer on behalf of veterans.
Maricopa County is predominantly Republican, but voters there have been willing to back Democrats against Trump-aligned candidates. With enough resources, Stringham can get his message out to swing voters in this way down ballot race where democracy truly is in the balance.
