50 Days to Go: Dr. Yadira Caraveo
Who: Dr. Yadira Caraveo
Where: CO-08 (north of Denver, including the cities of Greeley and Westminster)
Why: One-term incumbent Dr. Yadira Caraveo, a pediatrician and first-generation Mexican-American, is fighting to hold onto her seat.
Caraveo has distinguished herself for her bipartisan work ethic during her short tenure on the Hill, where she has advocated for continued support of the SNAP program and addressing the fentanyl crisis.
Republican challenger Gabe Evans, like Caraveo, has served in the state legislature, and he is the grandson of Mexican immigrants. Evans has repeatedly voted to restrict reproductive freedoms in Colorado as a legislator.
In November, Coloradans will have an opportunity to approve a ballot measure that would codify a right to abortion in the state constitution and repeal the prohibition of using public funds for abortion services.
The ballot measure could help turn out Caraveo voters. Less favorably to her, two weeks ago, a Libertarian Party candidate dropped out of the race and threw his support to Evans. In 2022, Caraveo won by less than 2,000 votes in a race where a different Libertarian party candidate received 9,280 votes.
